Artist's comments:  Pushing techniques so an indefinite landscape in real terms can create a landscape within the mind of the viewer. These are my first serious forays into abstraction.

Though they are extremely challenging, they are thrilling to do, and I'm pleased with the result.

Horses

Artist's comments:  A powerful and emotive subject.  The idea here was not to define the horses, but allow each one to arrive through a combination of many loose layers and immediate, considered strokes. Movement was important to convey, but so too a sense of the viewer "knowing" the horses so as to have intimacy with them - while they do what they've always done, free of us  - created by contradicting that movement.

Flowers

Artist's comments: An attempt to capture the bursting and transient energy of flowers. Really only one petal is defined, so hopefully the others are created within the mind of the viewer, with considered yet free-flowing, bold strokes, and many combinations of subtle techniques.  Also a highly challenging painting - one stroke makes a huge difference to its balance - and in bringing a small subject into a big scale. Very enjoyable to do.
